How do you title a car at the Lakewood MVC after a lease buyout?
Once the lease is paid off, the car has to be titled to you. For Lakewood drivers that usually means the MVC Vehicle Center on Route 70, and it runs on appointments. Here is what to expect so you only go once.
Which Lakewood MVC office handles titles?
The NJ MVC’s Lakewood Vehicle Center is at 1195 Route 70, Leisure Center, Store 9, Lakewood, NJ 08701. The MVC lists its general hours as Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm and Saturday 8am to 3pm (NJ MVC vehicle centers). Check the MVC site before you go, because hours can change.
The detail that catches people out: new titles and title transfers there are by appointment only. Walk-ins are limited to things like driving abstracts and disability placards. Book your appointment as soon as you know your buyout date.
If you are also renewing or replacing a driver’s license, that is a different building. The nearest licensing center listed by the MVC is in Toms River, at 1861 Hooper Avenue (NJ MVC facility locations).
What happens between the payoff and your MVC appointment?
- The lender pays off the leaseYour buyout loan sends the payoff to the leasing company before the payoff quote expires.
- The leasing company releases the titleThe leasing company owns the car until it is paid. After payoff, it assigns the title over to you. How and when it sends the paperwork varies by leasing company, so we track it for you.
- You book the Lakewood MVC appointmentOnce the paperwork is in hand, book the appointment at the Lakewood Vehicle Center.
- You title the car with the lender as lienholderBecause the buyout is financed, the lender is recorded on the New Jersey title.
What should you bring to the Lakewood Vehicle Center?
The NJ MVC’s guidance on titling a vehicle (NJ MVC) points to these items. Confirm the current list with the MVC before your appointment.
- The previous title, assigned to you on the back by the seller, which in a buyout is the leasing company
- Proof that sales tax was paid, or payment of the tax at the agency if it was not paid at purchase
- Your lender’s name, address and federal EIN, so the lien can be recorded
- Your identification and a form of payment for the fees
We give Lakewood customers a checklist for their specific leasing company and lender, because the paperwork the leasing company sends is not identical from one company to the next.
How much are the New Jersey title fees?
| Title type (NJ MVC) | Fee |
|---|---|
| Standard title, no lien | $60 |
| Financed, one lien (a typical financed buyout) | $85 |
| Financed, two liens | $110 |
Source: NJ MVC title fees. Registration fees are separate and depend on the vehicle. Sales tax at 6.625% is usually the biggest number; see why Lakewood’s UEZ rate does not apply to cars.
Does the car need an inspection after the buyout?
Buying the car does not, by itself, trigger a New Jersey safety inspection. Since August 2010, regular gasoline passenger cars in New Jersey get an emissions inspection, not a safety inspection, every two years once they are past a five-year new-vehicle exemption (NJ MVC inspection FAQs). Most leased cars are newer than that, so many Lakewood buyouts will not need an inspection right away. Check the date on your windshield sticker.
When it is due, the Lakewood inspection station is at 1145 Route 70, just down the road from the Vehicle Center.
The lease-end wear-and-tear inspection is a different thing entirely. It is the leasing company’s check on a car you return. If you buy the car, that inspection does not apply.
What usually causes delays?
- Waiting on the leasing company’s title paperwork. Chasing it is part of what we handle for you.
- No MVC appointment booked. Lakewood title transfers are appointment-only, so book early.
- Missing lender details. Bring the lender’s name, address and EIN, or the lien cannot be recorded.
- Sales tax confusion. Know from your payoff letter whether tax was already charged.
